Our sister site, MotoringFile, reports on all things MINI the same way we cover the world of scooters. They’ve taken the lid off an electric scooter concept from MINI called the Citysurfer. One part kick scooter, one part Segway, the Citysurfer aims to fill in that gap between where large scale transportation ends and your actual destination.
As populations continue to cluster in and around urban areas, transportation challenges magnify. Even for folks on two wheels, convenient parking isn’t always available. Even cities with great mass transit still have gaps. The Citysurfer concept aspires to bridge the distance between the trunk of your car and your office. Or perhaps between your home and the nearest commuter train. The Citysurfer concept does this by delivering a 15 mph top speed over a range of 10-15 miles. Weighing in at just 40 lbs, one could easily enough fold the unit up and lug it into the office to nibble on electricity during the day. It certainly beats the Segway’s 100 lb curb weight, yet still manages to fold down compact enough to fit in the boot of a MINI.
At any rate, MINI is hardly re-inventing the wheel here, but what they are doing with the Citysurfer concept is putting a level of premium design behind the commuter scooter form factor. With disk brakes front and rear and what look like tubeless tires sitting on MINI-inspired rims, the Citysurfer is far and away the best looking personal transportation product we’ve seen, well, since MINI’s last electric scooter concept, the Scooter E.
Therein lies the rub. Is MINI just teasing us with yet another beautiful electric transportation option? We hope not. What gives us hope is that MINI already offers a high-end MINI branded folding commuter bicycle. If the Citysurfer went to production, we’d likely see more conventional bicycle wheels like are found on MINI’s folding bicycle, but that’s fine with us. They’d be lighter anyway. Production realities remain to be seen, but in the meantime, it’s an exciting concept.
In the meantime, head over to MotoringFile and check out all the details and some additional photos. If you dig the concept, leave a comment over on MF and let MINI know you’re into it. World Premier: MINI Citysurfer Concept
