Since we broke the pricing on the upcoming Vespa 946, the seemingly stratospheric price has been the main part of the conversation. At $9,946 USD, the 946 is a 125cc scooter in the same price range as 650cc maxi-scooters like the Suzuki Burgman or the BMW C-series scooters. It’s been tough for a lot of scooter fans to make the connection between a small (if remarkable) scooter and such a big price tag.

Video: PBS NewsHour on Helmet Laws and Motorcycle Deaths
In a recent episode of PBS’s NewsHour, Rick Schmitt of Fairwarning.org comes on to discuss a recent CDC study regarding the correlation between motorcycle deaths and helmet use. More specifically, to point out that while both car and motorcycle use have both gone up, automobile fatalities have dropped sharply, while motorcycle (and ostensibly, by extension, scooter) fatalities have more than doubled. The study draws a correlation between the sharp uptick in motorcyclist fatalities and an ever shrinking patchwork of mandatory helmet use laws.
