The official itinerary for the Vespa Club of America’s annual mega-rally, Amerivespa, won’t be available for at least a week, but if the rumors and hints being dropped by riders from the host city of San Diego prove true, it should be a doozy of an event. Anticipation is building and many have already booked their hotels for the event, which takes place June 27 – 30.
Chief among recent rumors is that the English Beat has been booked to play. While the only original member of the ’80s 2-Tone band likely to play with this incarnation is frontman Dave Wakeling, fans who’ve seen them in recent years have reported that they still put on a great show. [Update 1/18/2013: This has been confirmed by the VCOA.]
Other tidbits that have been floating around for some time:
- There will likely be a ride to Mexico, possibly sponsored by Vespa Club Maxima Velocidad out of Tijuana.
- There will be a second attempt at breaking the Guiness World Record for “World’s Largest Scooter Parade.” A North American record was set last year and the attempt proved to be one of the highlights of the rally.
- Probable destinations around San Diego include Julian, a ride across the Coronado Bridge and around Coronado Idland, tours of the cities’ neighborhoods, and possibly an endurance run to the desert town of Borrego Springs.
- There has been chatter about a possible maxiscooter ride and a classics-only ride, but these are less solid than other rumors.
If that’s not enough to excite you, San Diego offers some of the best roads and scenic vistas in the country. It’s also home to one of the most vibrant scooter communities in the region, with plenty for all types of riders and scooters. Info on discounted hotel rates, registration and the full itinerary will be posted to amerivespa.org soon, we’re told.
Note: As of this posting, amerivespa.org is down for maintenance. Information is currently available on the Amerivespa Facebook page.
Update, 1/18/2013: Amerivespa.org is now up and early registrations are open. The schedule has not been posted yet.
