Today on Twitter, I got some terrific news, this year’s Bearded Lady Motorcycle Freak Show will be held July 21, 2012. Now what might a motorcycle show have to do with scooters, you might ask? The scooter scene in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota is one of the most active in the country. Between a top-knotch scooter shop and the most riders per-capita of anywhere in the country, the TC is a great place to ride a scooter. One of the key events on the calendar each year is the Bearded Lady Motorcycle Freak Show. It’s a great event for a number of reasons.
Firstly, it’s scooter-welcoming. Most motorcycle events are not friendly to scooters. Bearded Lady doesn’t just allow scooters, there’s actually a category in the judged show for scooters. Each year, a good contingent of the usual suspects show up.
Secondly, Bearded Lady is great because it’s a genuine run-what-you-brung event. You’ll see homemade motorcycle and scooter creations at Bearded Lady you won’t see anywhere else. And not pretentious, $60,000 show choppers, but genuine garage masterpieces put together by the locals. Sure, there’s plenty of Harleys and even the occasional Boss Hoss riders that show up, but if you can ignore that lot and look between the V-twins there is always some genuinely interesting stuff to be seen — including tons of scooters, mopeds, motorized bicycles and small, board track-style creations.
Lastly, I have to recommend the Bearded Lady Motorcycle Freak show on its own merits as an event. There’s lots of great food, fun people, live music and the event takes place at the 331 Club, with nearby restaurants and art galleries more than worth a visit. So if you’re looking for a gnarly event to haul your scooter to this year, make sure Bearded Lady is on your list.
